As South by Southwest (SXSW) begins, people are abuzz about the most exciting things to look forward to at this year’s festival. Since 1987, SXSW has dedicated itself to helping creative people achieve their goals. Best known for its conference and festivals that celebrate the convergence of the interactive, film, and music industries, the event is an essential destination for global professionals. Each year the conference features sessions, showcases, screenings, exhibitions, and a variety of networking opportunities.
Some of the biggest news going into this year’s SXSW is the recently announced talk with the 47th Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden, who will speak on Sunday, March 12 at 3:30pm at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, TX. In his speech, Vice President Biden will outline his plans for a Biden cancer initiative.
Vice President Biden will outline his plans for a Biden cancer initiative, calling on attendees at SXSW to join him in taking on the disease. In his remarks, he will reflect on the progress made under his leadership of the White House Cancer Moonshot; call for innovative solutions to tackle the barriers that prevent faster gains in ending cancer as we know it; and describe how he plans to remain in the fight.
“We’re excited to have Vice President Biden address the creative innovators and entrepreneurs that attend SXSW,” said Hugh Forrest, Chief Programming Officer in a sxsw.com article. “His commitment and leadership is crucial at a time when the smartest minds from the worlds of technology and healthcare are working together to create groundbreaking new solutions in the battle to end cancer.”
Another big topic going into the conference is the opening night film “Song to Song,” starring Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Rooney Mara and Natalie Portman. This modern day love story centers around two couples in Austin, Texas. Gosling and Mara play struggling songwriters, while Fassbender plays a music mogul who seduces a young waitress, Portman. With La La Land just in his review mirror, Gosling’s performance as another musician has critics buzzing.
Another highly anticipated premier is “Baby Driver.” Directed by Edgar Wright, the film follows a young getaway driver, Ansel Elgort, who relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. The cast also includes Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx.
If you’re going to SXSW and looking for something a little different from the usual headliners, check out “G-Funk” produced by iconic rapper Warren G. The documentary follows 3 young men who grew up together in East Long Beach, and managed to stay out of trouble by creating music. They later became the iconic musicians Snoop Dog, Warren G, and Dr. Dre.
The festival takes place in Austin, Texas from March 10th through March 19th.
