Looking for ways to celebrate Lunar New Year in LA? Well, we’ve got you covered! Below are five events being held around the city for Chinese New Year.
1. The Huntington’s Chinese New Year Festival
The Huntington Library is celebrating Lunar New Year with a Chinese New Year Festival on February 5th and 6th.
This is an excellent event for families! There will be different exhibitions, like martial arts and Tai Chi performances, art displays, and all sorts of food trucks and dining specials.
You can head to the Chinese Garden between 10 am and 5 pm to enjoy the festivities. Make reservations online before attending the event.
2. Lunar New Year at The Grove
Shoppers at The Grove can expect to be greeted by massive displays set up in celebration of Lunar New Year from now until February 6th. Each display commemorates the history of Chinese New Year and welcomes the Year of the Tiger.
Different stores and restaurants at The Grove also offer special sales and even traditional red envelopes, representing luck and well wishes for the new year.
3. 2022 Community Lunar New Year Celebration
Another fun and educational event is the 2022 Community Lunar New Year Celebration.
Hosted by RUNWAY Playa Vista and parent volunteers from Braddock Dr. Elementary, attendees can enjoy yummy food while watching live entertainment. UCLA’s ACA Lion Dance Team will be performing, and the ICEA Children’s Chorus and West LA Chinese Children’s Chorus.
There will be dance performances, arts and crafts, and games. Attendees can also participate in a raffle for $5 per ticket.
This event will take place on February 6th from 10 am to 1 pm at RUNWAY Playa Vista.
4. Lunar New Year at Santa Monica Place
Until February 8th, Santa Monica Place is dressed up in gold and red lanterns for Lunar New Year. Shoppers can also participate in the traditional Chinese New Year festivity of tying a red ribbon, symbolizing a wish for the new year, onto a cherry blossom tree.
Like The Grove, Santa Monica Place is distributing red envelopes that offer sales at select stores and restaurants. Kids can also grab a craft kit and fortune cookie before heading home.
5. Chinese Chamber of Los Angeles
On February 12th, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles is showing an animated virtual program, called "Through the Eyes of the Dragon,” as a means of celebrating Lunar New Year safely.
The educational video will be shown in three parts, with each section exploring the history of Chinese culture in Los Angeles from a different perspective–past, present, and future. Those who watch will also learn about the Year of the Tiger specifically and what it means to celebrate this Lunar New Year.
