Learn More About Our Local Sea Shepherd Chapter

We were able to ask our local Sea Shepherd Chapter more about their organization and how they protect wildlife.

Take a look at our Q+A with an amazing organization to learn more about them and how you can get involved.

  1. What is the mission statement of Sea Shepherd?

Our mission is to protect defenseless marine wildlife and end the destruction of habitat in the world's oceans. Since 1977, Sea Shepherd has used innovative direct-action tactics to defend, conserve and protect the delicately balanced biodiversity of our seas and enforce international conservation laws.

  1. What distinguishes you from other organizations fighting to save the sea?

Sea Shepherd is more than an ocean conservation organization - we are a global movement. Driven by the passion of our volunteers from around the world, we are on the front lines, using direct action tactics to directly intervene against the biggest threats facing the world's ocean.

  1. Why do you think it’s important now more than ever to save our oceans?

Planet Earth is Planet Ocean. Over 70% of the Earth's surface is covered by water, providing up to 80% of the oxygen we breathe. Our ocean is in trouble and if the ocean dies, we die. The ocean plays a key role in regulating atmospheric temperature and is home to an abundance of life. To save the planet, we must save the ocean.

  1. What can readers from the LA area and beyond do to contribute to the purpose of the organization?

Join the LA Chapter. We’re active and accepting applications. Get Involved / Chapters / Los Angeles. Sea Shepherd, Los Angeles is a very active chapter with many dedicated volunteers who spend their weekends participating in beach cleanups, tabling at concerts and festivals, being a voice for marine wildlife at special meetings, and otherwise representing Sea Shepherd in and around our diverse and vibrant city. Kevin Yzaguirre and Chelsie Foster are the Los Angeles Coordinators. They can be reached at la@seashepherd.org. Follow us on Social Media. FB: SeaShepherd Los Angeles IG: seashepherd_la / Once you become a volunteer we have dedicated pages as well.

  1. What are the future plans of the organization and how do they plan on expanding their reach?

Sea Shepherd continues to work with governments around the world to address the enormous issue of illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. Our partnerships in West Africa have led to the arrests of dozens of fishing vessels, saving the lives of countless marine animals. Here in Los Angeles, our onshore chapter is holding monthly Beach CleanUps, resurrecting our table events (post-Covid) such as VeganFest, Dive Shows, Abbot Kinney Festival (pending), and more. We’re also encouraging a hearty Social Media presence as Los Angelenos love to network the wealth of experiences we share. Get connected with us!! FB: Sea Shepherd Los Angeles IG: seashepherd_la / Once you become a volunteer, we also have dedicated portals for upcoming information and events.
