There are few things better than living in Silicon Beach during the summer. While the valley is experiencing heat waves well into the 100s, we get to enjoy the nice ocean breeze and sandy beaches. Another perk of living in Silicon beach? Boating. Whether you’re driving around a small speed boat or a beautiful sailboat, Marina del Rey is the place to be.

Sometimes though, the reality of owning isn’t as fun as the fantasy of it. There are docking fees, maintenance and other responsibilities that take away from the relaxing, joyfulness of having a boat. That’s when chartering a boat comes in handy.

Marina del Rey is the premier boating destination of the Greater Los Angeles Area and a good number of power yachts and sailboats in town are available to rent – some with a skipper to do the navigation for you, and others available as bareboat rentals to experienced sailors.

Here’s how you do it!

First and foremost you should make sure you are working with a company that is properly insured and licensed to operate from the Marina. Otherwise, you could get into some legal trouble that you really don’t want to have to worry about! Luckily, The Marina del Rey Convention & Visitors Bureau works closely with the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors to maintain this list of vetted charter companies that have the proper certifications and insurance.

Some of the Charters listed on the site are single-boat operations, but many of them are co-ops or associations with access to multiple boats. This means that whether you’re looking for a romantic way to spend the evening, or planning a birthday party 30 people strong, you can plan a memorable sailing trip from Marina del Rey.

Oh, and just an FYI: The Visitors Bureau does not offer a booking service. Please contact the charter companies directly.

I rented a boat… now where can I sail?

Guess what? That’s up to you, you can choose! Most companies start with a half-day or full-day sail package. Depending on your comfort level, you can ask for a gentle cruise down the harbor or you can ask to head out into the open ocean. You can enjoy the simple views of sunset on the marina, or you can decide to sail past world-famous Venice Beach and Santa Monica Pier, and the Malibu and Pacific Palisades cliffs. Another popular excursion is an overnight trip out to Catalina Island, where your ship stateroom can serve as your hotel. The world is your oyster!
